What’s happening in Minneapolis?

Lawmakers in Minneapolis are considering a proposal to establish a “Labor Standards Board” that would allow for the creation of sector-specific boards of unelected appointees to recommend working condition, wage, and other standards.

Why does this matter?

Increased oversight from a Labor Standards Board is no different than a government takeover of small and local businesses and will create unnecessary operational hurdles.

Minneapolis already has some of the strongest employee protections laws in the state – if not the country. Restaurant operators in the city already comply with a host of existing regulations and mandates, and there is currently no indication that those laws are ineffective.

Local owner-operators should be empowered to make wage, working condition, and benefit decisions that make the most sense for their individual communities. They shouldn’t be overtaken by an unelected government board.
